VR and Trainings
The modern learning problems

Average person thinks at a speed of 800 words per minute, yet the average presenter can speak at only 120 words per minute(Lunsteen, Metacognitive Listening, 106-123). This is the so-called effect of “leftover thinking space”. This means it is very hard to gain and keep participant’s attention during a training if you are just sharing information.

The modern learning problems
“Thought does not always mean said, Said does not always mean heard correctly,
Heard does not always mean understood correctly, Understood does not always mean agreed with,
Agreed does not always mean used, Used does not mean remembered.”
Konrad Lorenz
Ethologist and Nobel Prize winner

Isn’t personal experience the best teacher? An yet – the most expensive one.
When it comes to safety trainings we are not able to put people right in the dangerous situations to make them realize what would be the consequences of their inappropriate behavior.
Can you even imagine to leave a team leader responsible for 10 or 15 people to learn only from his on-the-job experience?
Travel, accommodation, training hall etc. – how much do these many associated costs add to your training budget? Can you estimate the price of separating people from their job while they are in training?

The Experience Is An Expensive Teacher
VR – what problems do we solve

In typical trainings we usually apply different audio and visual tools to capture the attention and to accelerate learning. But in VR we produce a whole reality that is “speaking” to the trainee, engaging almost all of his senses. You don’t need presentations because everything in the VR environment is “speaking” to the person. When a trainee puts on the VR headset practically there is no way to get distracted and you have your audience’s 100% attention.

In Virtual Reality we create secure environment where people not only hear or see new information, but also they have the opportunity to experience consequences of their choices and draw conclusions based on personal experience.
We know that for sure the personal experience is the best teacher.
VR is so immersive. You gain much higher engagement in comparison to any typical distance learning format.

With VR you have the option for Indoor Facilitated Training, but you also have the opportunity for Distance learning. You don’t need to gather all the people on the same place, they might be anywhere in the world and celebrate learning experience together. This allows you to invest the savings from travel and accommodation in activities with higher value added.
VR learning apps also allow you to design very engaging individual training. For example, when it comes to onboarding trainings you don’t need to wait to have whole training group and you may start the onboarding process right after hiring the new person.

When it comes to senior people trainings, we frequently face the ego-challenge. People believe that they are just O.K. They can hardly realize they need to change their behavior or interiorize new knowledge.
This is the greatest power of VR – in virtual reality the learning is based on your own experience. Right on the spot you may see the consequences of your decisions.
VR unveils to people their needs to change or development areas. Furthermore, the experience motivates them to pursue new insights and learning.

Virtual Reality Cases
Health and safety
Production company needed to reduce classroom time but still provide more efficient health and safety trainings using learning technologies innovations. Developing customized VR app, they were able to put people in practical but simulated working environment. Participants had to pass through different hazard situations where they were able to experience the effect of inappropriate health and safety behavior. Having the opportunity not just to be instructed but to have hands-on experience about the potential hazards, they were able to realize the importance of health and safety regulations. At the end they had to pass through a test in Virtual Reality where they had to identify hazard situations or “near miss” situations. As a result they had a safe and convincing learning tool, closer to the real situations but cutting classes duration.
Onboarding trainings
Company from the FMCG sector, producing and managing own consumer brands, wanted to optimize the onboarding process helping new hires adapt faster, promote company values and positive attitudes about affiliation within the organization. The gamified VR application let them make inducting process much more engaging. By just putting the VR headset the newcomers were able to go on virtual visits into the three different production sites. They can study the company value chain and production processes. The app reveals also the various company brands. Passing through gamified VR exercises participants were able to embrace each organisational value in day-to-day work. By having the VR onboarding app company was able to support and engage new hires on a real time. No need to wait for a whole group to be gathered. No need to put people in classroom.
Captivating audience that is hard to engage
A financial multinational company planned management skills programme for middle management team. The managers had participated lots of courses and had the illusory feeling they had nothing to learn. During a one-day “Change Agility” training the participants explored real situations and results driven by their choices during a VR business simulation. They comprehended the ability to anticipate and adapt to change. Due to the simulations trainees recognized the importance of passing through change in a positive and focused manner. Later on they practiced techniques and ideas for supporting their teams. Managers were much more engaged during the training because the VR simulation made them conceive the idea of change agility.
